After years of close calls, the Lombardi Trophy finally returned to the NFC West. The LA Rams topped the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl 56 by a score of 23-20. LA will now have the daunting task of trying to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
Of course, the Rams will need to get through the NFC West before they can start planning another parade. That task is easier said than down as the NFC West produced three playoff teams last season.
San Francisco even made it all the way to NFC Championship Game last season. The 49ers beat the Rams in both meetings during the regular season but fell short in the playoffs. San Fran’s defense should make them competitive in every game this season.

LA (+130) has the shortest odds of any NFC West team to win the division. The Rams are coming off their first Super Bowl Victory since the 1999 season. Of course, this season will present new challenges for the defending Super Bowl champions.
First and foremost, LA will have to battle the dreaded Super Bowl Hangover. No team has won back-to-back NFL championships in nearly two decades. The Rams brought in plenty of fresh talent to ensure they are still hungry for another title run.

One of the team’s biggest acquisitions was the signing of WR Allen Robinson. The veteran WR should give QB Matthew Stafford another great option to work with. Robinson could be especially impactful with the losses of WRs Odell Beckham, Jr and Robert Woods.
Speaking of Stafford, the Rams will need another strong year from the veteran QB if they want to repeat. Stafford threw for over 4,800 yards and 41 TDs last season. It was the ninth time Stafford has surpassed 4,000 passing yards in his career.
LA is bringing back its defensive leader, Aaron Donald, as well. Donald pondered retirement this offseason before signing a massive new contract. A refocused Donald is key to the Rams’ chances of winning the NFC West again.
San Francisco 49ers (+165)
The San Francisco 49ers (+165) definitely deserve consideration from any division bettor this season. San Francisco went 2-1 against the Rams last season. Unfortunately, that one loss came in the NFC title game.
This year, the 49ers appear poised to move on from QB Jimmy Garoppolo. Team officials named second year QB Trey Lance as the 49ers’ starters. Whether the team cuts or trades Jimmy G is yet to be seen.
Lance will certainly have plenty of weapons around him in the 49ers’ offense. WR Deebo Samuel retracted his trade request and instead signed a huge new deal. Third year WR Brandon Aiyuk and Pro Bowl TE George Kittle are also in line for huge seasons.
San Francisco Has Also Invested Heavily in the RB Position
HC Kyle Shanahan relies heavily on the running game, so multiple starting-level players are necessary. The 49ers drafted RB Tyrion Davis-Price in the third round after also drafting Elijah Mitchell and Trey Sermon last year.
Shanahan and the 49ers spent their first pick in the draft on DE Drake Jackson out of USC. Jackson joins a defensive unit that was ranked in the top 10 last season. He should have plenty of chances to show off his skills playing alongside Nick Bosa.
Arizona Cardinals (+350)
The other Wild Card team to come out of the NFC West last season was the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona stumbled into the playoffs after a second-half collapse last year. As a result, it was not surprising that they went one and done.
What was surprising was the nature of their loss. QB Kyler Murray and the rest of the Cardinals simply did not show up for the game. The 34-11 loss was a brutal way for Murray to begin his post-season career.
The drama did not stop there for Murray, either. Murray was involved in one of the biggest storylines of the offseason. The very public contract negotiation made a lot of fans and NFL pundits question Murray’s leadership abilities.

Arizona will also start the year with WR DeAndre Hopkins who is suspended for a PED violation. Given every that has happened this year, it is not surprising that Arizona is only +350 to win the division.
If the Cardinals have any hopes of winning the NFC West, they need to avoid another end-of-season collapse. HC Kliff Kingsbury has a habit of coaching teams that fall apart at the end of the season. Arizona started 7-0 last season but had a 4-6 record in their remaining 10 games.
Seattle Seahawks (+1400)
The final team in the division is the rebuilding Seattle Seahawks (+1400). Seattle traded away their franchise QB Russell Wilson earlier this year. The Seahawks then made the somewhat surprising move of not drafting Wilson’s replacement.
As a result, Seattle will head into the season with Geno Smith and Drew Lock as their QB options. The defense also needs a lot of work after giving up the fifth most total yards last season.
One player that will have to step up this season for Seattle is WR DK Metcalf. Seattle signed Metcalf to a three-year, $72 million extension in July. Metcalf will certainly have his work cut out for him trying to earn that contract this season.
RB Chris Carson retired this summer due to a neck injury. Carson’s absence should create a spot for RB Kenneth Walker III, who Seattle drafted in the second round. Of course, that depends on how Walker recovers from his hernia injury.
Despite the odds, Seattle still cannot be counted out in the NFC West division race. The Seahawks also play division rivals tough. If they can still a few wins in their division, they can potentially steal the whole thing.
NFC West Division Betting Predictions
The regular season has not started yet, so it is hard to completely write off any one team. However, realistically, Seattle is not going to compete for the NFC West crown this year. The Cardinals also have a history of falling off after October, so they’re out too.
Assuming Trey Lance is the real deal, the 49ers and Rams should battle it out all season. However, in the end, I would pick experience over young talent. I think the Rams (+130) repeat as NFC West division winners.
Of course, that all depends on Stafford’s health. If his elbow injury is worse than the Rams are letting on, then everything changes. Even if Stafford only misses a handful of games, that could be enough to hand the division title to San Francisco.
